Nekoosa, a city of 2,624 population is situated on the beautiful Wisconsin River three miles south of our sister community, Port Edwards. The two are yoked together in industry since Georgia-Pacific Corporation operates a paper mill in each. The Nekoosa Mill employs some 750 men and women in this city and surrounding communities as well as providing a market for those who harvest pulp wood in this vicinity. The Nekoosa Corporation in the manufacturing and distribution of paper mill machinery and supplies, and the 3M Company in the manufacturing of paper supplies are also a source of employment to many local residents. The employment these industries provide creates a financial balance for comfortable living. Nekoosa is located on State Highways 73 and 173 as well as on County Trunk Highway AA. A modern bridge has been built across the Wisconsin River to the Town of Saratoga replacing the old steel structure that had been serving the two communities from 1916 to 1963. Prior to that time, traffic across the river was served by two ferries. The one near the present business center being called the "Upper Ferry" and the cable ferry located about as half mile below the mill was called the "Lower Ferry." The city has three churches--Catholic, Lutheran and United Church of Christ. The enrollment of the public and parochial schools of Nekoosa is about 1,600 pupils. The Nekoosa High School, which opened in the fall of 1970, houses the Senior High; Alexander Middle School houses grades 4 through 8; and Humke Elementry School, grades K through 3. The new Middle School opened for classes in the fall of 1996. The Sacred Heart parochial school consists of grades K through 8. The curriculum for all grades is constantly under study and changes are made whenever it is beneficial to the students. Nekoosa public schools are and always have been rated "integrated"-the state's highest rating. A new library building was constructed during 1997. Opening day was November 17. This library is centrally located and has computer facilities. Fire protection is afforded to the city of Nekoosa by means of a 20 man volunteer fire department equipped with the best fire fighting equipment. A 20 man volunteer ambulance department is also available to operate modern ambulances equipped with the latest necessary equipment. A new handicapped accessible City Hall addition has been built on the Nekoosa Safety Center to provide easy public access. Professional facilities available in Nekoosa include a fully staffed clinic, two dentists, an optometrist and a chiropractor which are assisted by a capable staff of technicians to administer to the needs of the area. The Nekoosa-Port Edwards State Bank, Nekoosa Credit Union and Paper City Savings Association are conveniently located and offer the latest innovations in financial services to the community and surrounding area. Riverside Park is an attractive and spacious picnic site located on the Wisconsin River on the north side of the city. It is well equipped to accommodate large and small picnic groups. A beautiful setting enhances the swimmimg pool, tennis and basketball courts and baseball diamonds available for residents of the area during the summer months.
